By it's anatomical peculiarities this dog is predestinated to puffin-hunting on the steep rocks around the fjords and along the shore.
CLASSIFICATION: Group 5 spitz and primitive types.
Section 2 Nordic hunting dogs. Without working trial.
Spitz type dog, small, rectiangular, supple, rather lightly made; morphologial charactieristics different according to sex. Strong limbs; six toes at least on each foot. Five toes of the forelegs and four of the hindlegs must rest on the ground. The tail is coiled either in a ring shape, slightly rolled over on to the back, or hanging.
Alert, energetic, lively.
Clean-cut, medium width, cone shaped.
Skull: Slightly rounded with prominent superciliary arches.
Stop: Pronounced, but without excess.
Muzzle: Cone shaped of medium length. Nasal bridege slightly convex.
Teeth / Bite: Scissor bite preferred but pincer bite or a moderate prognathism of the lower jaw must not be penalized. The absence of premolars on both sides, in each jaw, is very common.
Eye: Slightly almond shaped and not protruding; the iris is yellowish brown; the pupil is encircled by a dark more or less wide halo.
Ears: Triangular ears of medium size, broad at the base, carried erect and very mobile. The cartilage of the ear lobe has the faculty of being able to retract itself so that the ear folds itself and flops in a specific manner, either backwards or in right angle upwards so as to close the auditiory passage.
Clean-cut, of medium lenght, quite strong with a relatively well furnished ruff.
Rectangular, strong; topline straight.
Croup: Slightly sloping.
Chest: Of medium width, long, relatively well let down and spacious, not barrel shaped.
Belly: Slightly drawn up.
Set high, medium length, well covered with hair but without flag. Carried either in a ring or slightly rolled over onto the back, or hanging. Must not be either rolled up like that of the Buhund, Elkhound or of a Spitz, nor lalling to one side. If a smell or a sound attacts the dog's attention, the tail hangs and its tip forms a hook.
FOREQUARTERS: Without excessive angulation.
Forearm: Straight.
Feet: Oval shaped, turning slightly outwards, with at least six toes - of which five must rest on the ground. Eight pads on each foot. The two inner toes, formed respectively by 3 and 2 phalanges and endowed with a ligamentary and muscular system, make the leg look solid.
HINDQUARTERS: Moderate angulation. Strong. The position of the hindquarters is somewhat close.
Upper and lower thights: Muscular.
Feet: Oval shaped feet, turned slightly outwards, with at least six toes - four of which must rest on the ground. Seven pads on each foot, the one in the middle, the most important one by its size, being attached to the inner pads corresponding to the two inner toes. When the dog is standing up on a flat surface, the weight of the body must be evenly distributed on the pads.
Light and elastic. An external rotary action of the forelegs is characteristic of the breed. Movement of the hindlegs straight.
Dense and rough. Short on the head and the front og the legs, more abundant at the level of the neck, rear of the buttocks (thighs) and on the tail, but without flag. Undercoat soft.
Hair:
Colour: Always combined with with, from red to fawn; coat more or less sprinkled with black tips: grey; white with dark patches. In general, the tips of the hairs darken progressively with the ageing of the subject.
Male; 35-38 cm.
Female: 32-35 cm.
A dog, which would be at the maximum limit of the standard, shall not take
preference over another smaller one, showing otherwise the same qualities.
Male: about 7 kg,
Female: about 6 kg.
Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be exact proportion to its degree.
Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully descended into the scrotum.
